Welcome to ForrestGreene.com
This new generation of my web site has been embarrasingly long in coming. In considering what I wanted to do with this site I settled in on a few basic topic areas. First, present some samples of my work. Second, share some ideas and thoughts about things going on in the world. And lastly, provide some information, and links to the information, that has helped me begin to understand this societyin which I find myself (and hopefullyalong the way present a few laughs).
Sticky Illustrations
Why do some illustrations stick? The image at right that I simply refer to as "hatman" was drawn about 1990. It has stuck with me, becoming at times a quasi logo. I have used it on designs for letterhead, note cards and will probably use it more times before I leave it behind. To my thinking it communicates someone in thought, or perhaps movement, the figure presenting a question to the viewer. I hope you will take a look at my illustration samples, and if you would like, share your thoughts. Here's A Link.
Reading Anything Interesting?
A biography, non-fiction, and a collection of novellas top my reading list now. I have a few suggestions that might pique your interest. For some more specifics on these books see WORDS.
Puff On A Rock, Somewhere
At the time we had about 20-30 chickens. We were noticing a few rats begin to appear here and there. This is not unusual if you keep chickens in the country. It was not until one ran across Joanne's shoe that we knew we had to take some serious action and take it fast.
The advertisement in our community newspaper said "Free To A Good Home", it also said they were "mousers" it definitely said "mousers" and that was definitely what we were looking for. We made plans to visit the person who placed this ad.
Puff, as his name turned out, came along with his sister Zipper. Zipper because as a kitten she zipped here and there. Puff because, well, because we liked the name Puff. Over the years both Zipper and Puff helped us with the rats, kept them out of sight, and sent them somewhere else. We were appreciative.
Fast forward 14-15 years. We no longer have chickens. Zipper was stopped zipping by our neighbors dogs and I buried her in our field. Puff just disappeared. I like to think he is sitting on a rock up in the forest that is behind our house watching a stump perhaps. Waiting patiently for a mouse to take his last stroll in the sun.
Someone You Need To Know About
His name is Ernest Becker. He was a cultural anthropologist. He recieved his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in 1960. Afterwards he taught at Simon Fraser University in Vancover.
He was one of those individuals from history that have the ability to pull back the curtain of mystery and reveal the truth that we as a society all to often shield from our eyes. As if we are blocking a bright sun, we avert our gaze, unable to endure the stark facts before us.
With his brilliant, Pulitzer Prize winning Denial Of Death, published in 1973, Ernest Becker presented the world as we should hope to understand it. With an honest, penetrating insight, his deconstruction of human nature and our social mores reveals the myths we use to get through the day and, in the end, our lives (no pun intended).
